By David Coulson,Executive Editor/Managing Partner. For a fleeting moment in Thursday night's season-opening football game at Wake Forest, Presbyterian was the toast of the college football world. Trailing 28-0 midway through the second quarter, the Blue Hose pulled off one of the best trick plays you will ever see in a football game. ...

In the Northeast, the temperature has been in the mid 90s and is scheduled to be the same through Thursday. The calendar is stalking the Labor Day weekend like a lion stalks its prey. College football fans everywhere can almost touch the game day atmosphere surrounding their perspective teams. Yes, the 2010 football season is finally here. The Villanova Wildcats won the national championship more than eight months ago. The rest of FCS has had to wait that long to put that memory out of their collective psyche. When you see a Wildcat coach, player, student, alumni, fan or family member, they all bear a smile, the smile of the victorious. That championship smile, that smile of a winner, that smile of being on top of the world, that satisfied smile. ...

Philadelphia, PA — As Dorothy Gale exclaimed near the end of her journey in "The Wizard Of Oz," there is no place like home. And as we start another season in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, the 33rd season of what began as I-AA football, I am experiencing a homecoming of my own, minus any tornadoes, or other weather-related catastrophes. I am returning to the College Sporting News after three years away as FCS Executive Director for The Sports Network. This is my 34th season of covering college football and my 18th year following FCS. ...

The summer is coming to an end and the best time of year is nearly upon us — the start of the football season! After an offseason that looked as if the shape of Division I conferences would see major changes, including many that were rumored to affect FCS teams, saw little movement and none among any FCS schools to this point, we are ready for another season. Another change that will affect all FCS teams is the increasing of the FCS playoffs from 16 teams to 20 teams —meaning an extra week of playoff action after the regular season concludes. This playoff change also means a move from the long-running championship game host Chattanooga, Tenn., to Frisco, Texas. That move makes the first time a Division I champion will be crowned west of the Mississippi River since 1988 when Idaho State’s Holt Arena hosted its second straight such contest. And a first ever, a FCS title game will be played in January instead of December. A "West" team has gone to the title game the last two seasons in Montana, but as we know the Grizzlies lost the contest to Richmond and Villanova, respectively, those two seasons. And as you know throughout my history of covering the region in my seven-plus seasons of covering FCS playoffs, I hope for another team and hope for a ‘West" team to finally win the title. ...

At last. The 2010 season, the one with new postseason opportunities, has arrived. The Big South Conference champion finally gets an automatic ticket to the FCS playoffs. And with more slots available overall, more than just two SoCon teams could play their way into the playoffs. Will Liberty capture the first playoff spot? Or will Stony Brook knock it out of first again? Or will someone else – Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina or Gardner-Webb – step up and surprise everyone? In the SoCon, Appalachian State begins defense of its conference title right away with a trip to Chattanooga. The Mocs don’t plan on being hospitable hosts, recognizing the opportunity to turn the conference race on its ear right away. Most observers, though, believe the Mountaineers and Elon will again take first and second – and two playoff spots. Can Furman, Wofford, Samford or UT-Chattanooga push them and maybe grab a third playoff spot for the SoCon? Perhaps the return to triple-option football could lift Georgia Southern and The Citadel to the upper levels. In other words, there are plenty of questions and lots of hope. And finally, there’s football. ...
